Many Choices for Your Household

Hamsters are a suitable pet for children and adults alike and with the different species of varying sizes and characteristics, together with the many colours available there is a wide choice available when choosing a pet hamster. However, not all hamster species are suitable pets for young children and in any case a young child will need the assistance of an adult carer to ensure correct care of any hamster.

The type of hamster suitable for a particular owner will vary and generally depends on several factors: the age of the intended owner, the number of hamsters required, the space available for the cage and of course, personal preference.

The basic and major part of the hamster's diet should be a hamster mix/commercial diet instead of your daily leftovers or other human food, as the latter may not contain the essential nutrients that a hamster need. A good brand of hamster mix should be bugs-free and contains essential nutrients of a balanced diet. There are different types of hamster food catering to Syrian and dwarf hamsters, so make sure you buy the correct type according to your hamster's breed.

Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are generally solitary and may fight to the death if put together, whereas some of dwarf hamster species may get along with others of the same species.

Care Sheet

Hamsters make delightful family pets. They sleep during the day and become active in the evening, ideal for many family schedules. Most hamsters, including Syrian hamsters, are solitary and must be kept alone. Occasionally, dwarf hamsters may be social and prefer to live in pairs or groups, however you should have an extra cage available in case they need to be separated.
General
Most hamsters are easy to handle once they learn to trust you. Allow your new pet a few days to settle into its new home before picking it up. Offering food from your hand helps to build confidence. Regular exercise in a safe area outside the cage is important, but wait for your hamster to wake up on its own, have a snack, and go to the bathroom before you take it out of its cage. Never wake a sleeping hamster as it may become irritable and bite.
